March 15, 2008
Are you upgrading your desktop or laptop to a new powerful model? Do you have any “private” information residing in your old computer and wanted to completely delete it before using your new pc? Here are some ways where you can safely erase you old data.
Usually, many people will just use the command “format” to their computer to remove the files and Operating System in their workstation. But without knowing, all these file are not fully erased using with a simple “format” command.
Months ago, one of my clients are end users within a banking industry. And we all know that data within this kind of industry are very sensitive compared to a normal business.
After I migrated every necessary files to be transferred, I let the user to confirm all the files were fully transferred. And I let them check it for ATLEAST 5 days just to make sure everything were transferred. This is a very important step because once you completely decommissioned your old PC using a special software, the possibility to retrieve the deleted files were 0%-1%.
One software I used to remove all the data is Killdisk software. There are various methods for you to choose in removing the old data in your computer using this software.
Again, make sure that all the important data were transferred or backed up before decommissioning your old workstation.
